BREAKING: Bodies Piling Up at Portimão Forensic Institute

Crematoriums overwhelmed, cadavers unclaimed

Portimão, Portugal – March 8, 2023

The Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal e Ciências Forenses (INMLCF) in Portimão is facing an unprecedented backlog of unclaimed cadavers, leading to a crisis situation at the facility. The crematoriums in the region are overwhelmed, and the INMLCF is running out of space to store bodies.

According to a spokesperson for the INMLCF, the backlog has been building for several months due to a combination of factors, including:

  • An increase in the number of deaths in the region
  • A shortage of crematorium capacity
  • Delays in families claiming the bodies of their deceased loved ones

As a result of the backlog, bodies are being stored in refrigerated containers outside the INMLCF, and the facility is struggling to keep up with the demand for autopsies and other forensic services.

The INMLCF is urging families to claim the bodies of their deceased loved ones as soon as possible to help alleviate the backlog. The facility is also working with local authorities to find additional space to store bodies and increase crematorium capacity.

The backlog of unclaimed cadavers is a serious problem that is impacting the ability of the INMLCF to provide essential services to the community. The INMLCF is urging families to claim the bodies of their deceased loved ones as soon as possible to help alleviate the backlog.
